PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — A suicide prevention walk was held in Philippi to spread awareness about mental health related topics and to bring the community together.

The Out of the Darkness walk aimed to shed light on the topic of suicide. 12 News spoke to volunteer Allison Corder-Spears who lost a loved one to mental health related issues. She spoke about the importance of gathering the community together for a cause like this.

“Well one, it's just coming together as a community for such a taboo topic if you will. Bring a light out of the darkness of suicide, that's why it's called out of the darkness and just coming together and just showing all the support," Corder-Spears said. "It's a very close cause to my heart, as I lost my dad."
