Friends of a young teen shark attack victim left fighting for life have been praised for their bravery.

Several boys sprung into action to bring their 14-year-old friend to safety after he was bitten in Torres Strait Islands waters about 6.20pm on Saturday.

The group had been fishing from a wharf off Cook Esplanade on Thursday Island — or Waiben — about 40km north of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland.

He suffered life-threatening abdominal injuries and was airlifted to the mainland by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) for treatment at Townsville University Hospital.

He remains there in a critical but stable condition, Queensland Health confirmed to 7NEWS.com.au on Monday.
