WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. (KAIT) - A World War II airfield that trained thousands of pilots finally received the recognition it deserved Saturday in Walnut Ridge when a new historical marker was placed at the site.

The Arkansas Heritage Historic Preservation Program placed the marker at the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport.

The Lawrence County Historical Society celebrated Oct. 11 when their efforts finally paid off.

Wings of Honor Museum President Terrence Ward said the recognition will allow them to continue to preserve history.

“This gives just a little short story of what this once bustling airfield was used for. The thousands of pilots that were here and the bustling activity that was at Walnut Ridge Airport,” Ward said.
