MOUNT VERNON, Texas (KETK) - East Texans gathered in front of the courthouse in downtown Mount Vernon on Saturday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Franklin County.
According to the Texas Almanac, the native Caddo people left the area of that would become Franklin County in the 1790's because of disease. White settlers then started to arrive in 1818 and Franklin County was later officially founded in 1875 with land from nearby Titus County.
"We have a lot of people moved from the Dallas area that have moved down to Lake Cypress Springs. They have homes here and they are very instrumental in our history with the lake and they're just like family to us now," Franklin County Judge Scott Lee said.
