Competing tax rate proposals back on city council agenda

Richmond City Council meets in regular session Monday at 6 p.m. Back on the agenda are competing proposals to decrease or maintain the city’s real estate tax rate, among other business.

Councilmembers Reva Trammell, Sarah Abubaker and Stephanie Lynch are proposing reducing the rate to $1.16 per $100 of assessed value, while President Cynthia Newbille and Mayor Danny Avula are proposing maintaining the rate at $1.20 as part of a plan that would include a 4-cent tax rebate for all property owners and other tax relief programs.

The tax rate proposals follow the latest real estate valuation that saw the city’s overall tax base increase by 5.74%.
