NEDROW, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Peter Jones' table at today's Indigenous People's Day Festival showcased his clay pottery and sculptures, each one different from the last. After 60 years of making clay pottery, he's still enjoying his craft.
"The sculptures are definitely people I know," said Jones, an Onondaga from the Beaver Clan.
Barry Powless, an Onondaga of the Eel Clan, started painting early in his life, but since he retired, he's dedicated more time to his craft. Powless uses his family as his inspiration for many pieces he creates.
"This is my father, he left us in 2017," said Powless.
He and Jones both use people to inspire their work, with the roots of their indigenous culture behind it all.
"We're just celebrating and highlighting the truths of who we are," Simone Gonyea, the eve
