Construction is progressing on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library’s main branch in Uptown, but officials said the completion date is behind schedule.
The $137.3 million project is set to open in spring 2027 — not in 2026 as initially planned.
Library Director Caitlin Moen attributed the delay to meticulous work necessary to ensure the building’s longevity, according to Axios Charlotte.
“This iconic building is something that’s not been built before,” Moen said, according to Axios. “As we try to bring this vision to life, but also ensure that 50-year lifespan, we are doing our due diligence.”
On Friday, the library gave reporters a guided tour of the construction site.
When completed, the 115,000-square-foot building, with five themed floors, is expected to attract about 1 million peopl
