A South-East Queensland council says it lost about $2 million when it was victim to a "major fraud incident", allegedly perpetrated by international criminal gangs.
Queensland Police has confirmed it, and the Australian Federal Police (AFP)-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre, is investigating the incident, that took place in December last year.
Noosa Council said while about $440,000 of the $2.3 million initially taken was recovered, the total loss was about $1.9 million.
In a statement released on Monday evening, Noosa Council CEO Larry Sengstock said it had not been related to "cyber security".
He said no council members had been involved in what he alleged had been a "sophisticated, strategic and targeted" hit.
