Former Montana state budget director Kurt Alme was confirmed last week by federal lawmakers as U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana, a post he’s held in an interim capacity since March when he was appointed by President Donald Trump.

Born in Great Falls, Alme returns to Montana’s U.S. Attorney’s Office for the second time. He served as U.S. Attorney for Montana under Trump from 2017 to 2020, and was replaced by Jesse Laslovich after Joe Biden was elected president.

The state’s U.S. Attorney leads the prosecution of federal crimes that occur in the region, such as drug trafficking or violent crime on Indian reservations, and represents the U.S. government in civil cases.
