Smith Elementary School was ordered to shelter-in-place Monday afternoon as police and Lewis and Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded nearby to a report of a person whom the caller believed was carrying some type of long gun, according to the Helena Police Department and Helena Public Schools.

Law enforcement officials never found a person who matched that description after a search of the area, according to Helena Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Domingo Leveque-Zapata. He said that no other people in the area had called in to report such a person.

“Currently, there is no threat to the public,” Leveque-Zapata said.
