The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a phone scam taking advantage of people in the community.

On Friday, Oct. 10, the Sheriff's Office received word of a phone scam in which an unknown suspect called the victim and claimed to be a member of law enforcement, claiming himself to be "Deputy Corey Jacobs." He then proceeded to say that the victim either had warrants for their arrest, had failed to appear for jury duty, or had missed appearing in court.

The scammer instills fear of immediate arrest if the victim is not compliant and demands payment through bitcoin. Similar scams in the past have also attempted to collect payment through gift cards and other forms of electronic cash transfer applications.
