Energy experts say UK householders have been given a big wake-up call on energy bills as the new Ofgem price cap takes effect.

The regulator's price cap is the maximum amount energy suppliers can charge you for each unit of energy and standing charge if you're on a standard variable tariff. From October 1 to December 31, 2025, the cap has been set at £1,755 per year for a typical household that uses electricity and gas and pays by direct debit, an increase of 2 per cent compared to the previous £1,720 cap.

Although it doesn't sound like a huge increase, it comes as we move into the colder, darker months of the year, when energy bills typically go up due to higher heating and lighting costs - a time when most would hope for pressures on bills to ease off, not ramp up.
