SCOTTSBURG — A local first responder, Dillon Williams, 26, is in critical condition at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, battling a rare and severe reaction to what started as a common cold.

His wife, Brooke Williams, has been at his side, making life-or-death decisions as his condition rapidly deteriorated. In a matter of three days, she was told her husband would die.

Dillon, who serves his community as an employee of Scott County EMS and a volunteer firefighter with the Vienna Township Volunteer Fire Department, was otherwise healthy before the sudden illness.

According to Brooke, doctors suspect Dillon suffered a rare complication of the cold, which led to a dangerous buildup of fluid around his heart that required emergency removal. Dillon has always been healthy, and doctors
