NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. —

A burglary suspect was hit by a car while fleeing the crime scene Monday morning in North Highlands, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said.

A 41-year-old man allegedly broke into a storage locker at the CubeSmart Storage on Watt Avenue. It's unknown if any items were taken. The suspect attempted to flee the scene on foot but was hit by a vehicle, the sheriff's office said.

Emergency medical services were dispatched around 4:01 a.m. to Roseville Road and Watt Avenue. It was unclear what caused the crash.

The person was seriously injured, but is expected to survive. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to remain there for several weeks. After he's discharged from the hospital, he will be arrested and booked into the county jail,
