MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — An inmate was sentenced to life in prison on top of his existing sentence for killing another inmate at the Northeast Correctional Complex.

Greg Barner, 50, was charged with first-degree murder in the 2023 death of Robert Henry Hicks Jr., 70.

An investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation determined that Barner had fatally stabbed Hicks.

Barner's life sentence will run consecutive to the 30-year sentence he is currently serving for murder in Knox County, according to the district attorney's office.
