FALMOUTH, Mass. —

Rescue efforts are underway in Falmouth after a person was spotted in the water on Monday afternoon by a passing ferry.

The crew of the Steamship Authority vessel M/V Island Home reported seeing a person in the water while it was sailing from Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole around 3:19 p.m.

The United States Coast Guard was immediately notified, and the M/V Island Home remained in the area conducting additional searches until the USCG arrived.

In a statement, a USCG spokesperson said they received the notification and are currently on the scene investigating.

A helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod is also assisting with the search efforts.
