HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) -- A Hagerstown woman has been reunited with her family after she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this year.
Melissa Tran, a Vietnamese refugee in the U.S. on a green card, had been in ICE custody for five months, detained at U.S. government holding facilities in Louisiana, Arizona and Washington State.
She said she had a previous run-in with law enforcement in 2003, when she was 19 years old, and that her boyfriend at the time coerced her. She was charged with writing a bad check, and infraction.
Tran says she paid restitution and served six months in jail for the offense. However, during a rally over the summer, her family said she was detained by ICE in May after she went for a check-in.
