BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) -- Mercer County educators are getting state approved training on the dangers of vaping and how to prevent children from picking up the habit.

Catch My Breath is a peer led program that aims at informing children about the dangers of e-cigarettes and vapes in hopes it will lead them to make better decisions.

Peer-review by the Office of the United States Surgeon General and the United States Public Health Services shows schools that use the program were half as likely to experiment with e-cigarettes as schools that did not use the program were.

Dr. Dan Doyle, coordinator of the Appalachian Pulmonary Health Project, gives the training to educators.

He said the national statistics show 5% of high schoolers and 3 to 4% of middle schoolers vape.
