Given the Maple Leafs lost, it wasn’t the storybook debut Easton Cowan might have hoped for.

But all things considered, the Leafs’ top prospect and highly hyped rookie looked all the world like the real deal.

“It was a fun game to play in,” said the 20-year-old Cowan. “Had lots of family friends here, so that meant a lot. Just obviously unfortunate that we didn’t get the win.”

It was a 3-2 decision for the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena, completing a Thanksgiving weekend sweep of their Atlantic Division rivals after a third-period Leafs rally fell short. Matthew Knies and Calle Järnkrok scored to tie it, but Mason Appleton’s goal with 45 seconds left was the winner.
