About a month ago, Raquel Look chose Monday for a ceremony in Côte Saint-Luc, Que., to mark the second anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Israel that killed her son Alexandre Look.

Alexandre was one of the 1,200 people killed that day when Hamas militants attacked a music festival in southern Israel, kidnapping 251 others.

Alexandre died while defending others who, like him, had sought refuge in a bunker all while his parents listened helplessly on the phone at home.

Monday's ceremony was held to honour victims in Côte Saint-Luc — an on-island Montreal suburb — in a park bearing Alexandre Look's name.

His mother said the event took on a whole new dimension, however, coinciding as it did with the release of the last 20 living Israeli hostages.
