LANSING — According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, the 2025 tax filing season saw an average state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) of $890 to about 665,000 recipients.

Combined with the federal EITC averaging $2,966, families received a total average credit of $3,856. The Michigan EITC for Working Families aims to assist those with lower incomes, boosting tax refunds or offering refunds even when no state income tax is owed.

Individuals must meet certain federal eligibility requirements and file a federal income tax return, to qualify, even if you owe no taxes or there is no reason to file a return.

If you qualify for the federal EITC, you automatically qualify for the Michigan EITC.
