NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - The Nacogdoches Public Library is preparing for the Dia de los Muertos by displaying an altar, or ofrenda.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to educate the public about what Dia de los Muertos is, it’s a wonderful cultural event,” said library manager Mercedes Franks.

It’s a tradition in the Mexican community and other parts of Latin America. Families remember, honor and celebrate loved ones who have died.

“It’s not sad because you are celebrating their lives and the memories you have with them,” Franks said.

The altar was made by Amand Quiroz a member of Groupo de Danza Folklorico son de Mexico.

“It’s a place where a family gives praise to the deceased. It has photographs, food and drinks that they enjoyed in life,” Quiroz said.
