NEW ORLEANS — Heartbreak and calls for peace filled a street in Algiers Monday night, as family and friends gathered to honor — a junior at L.B. Landry High School who was shot and killed a week ago.

The vigil took place near the 3700 block of Texas Drive, the same area where police say Johnson was found last Monday night — still wearing his school uniform.

During a balloon release Monday night, Jyran’s Mother, Janita Johnson reflected on the passing of her son.

“He was loved. He was really loved,” said Johnson

Janita described her son as a typical teenager who loved basketball, drawing, and spending time with family and friends. She said he dreamed of becoming an architect — even promising to one day build something special for her.
