PORTLAND, Ore. — Over the past several weeks, protests outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in South Portland have been in the national spotlight, covered by both journalists and social media influencers. For many, that has sparked the question: What is the difference between a journalist and a social media influencer?

People have been protesting there against President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement efforts for more than 100 days. There have been clashes between protesters and federal agents protecting the building. Early on, the demonstrations drew little national or local media attention.
