MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. — Kentucky's only national park is the site of the world's largest cave system, which attracts hundreds of thousands underground every year.
That's why October is typically a busy month for Mammoth Cave National Park , especially with the timing of Fall break for schools as leaves are changing and cooler weather arrives.
But when the calendar hit October 1 this year, the government shut down. That sent many federal workers across the country home, including employees at the national park.
Jennifer McNett is the director of Cave City Tourism, the same city that many pass through before arriving at the park.
"We were afraid people would just cancel their trips altogether and not even visit," McNett said.
