Australia's deputy prime minister praised U.S. President Donald Trump for the ceasefire deal he brokered between Israel and Hamas.
Under the ceasefire agreement that took effect last Friday, the remaining hostages were to be released within 72 hours. Israel released around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange.
Talking to the AuBC on Tuesday, Marles said "it is what we have been wanting for so long to see, an end to the catastrophe that's been playing out in the Middle East, a return of the hostages who have been held for more than two years now."
He said Australia stands ready to assist if needed.
"President Trump and his administration deserve an enormous amount of credit. This is an extraordinary achievement, one that will be remembered by history," Marles added, speaking from Canberra, Australia.
