Margaret Atwood was in the City of Poughkeepsie on Oct. 11, 2025, receiving the Eleanor Roosevelt Center's Lifetime Achievement Award for Bravery in Literature at the center's Banned Book Awards.

Atwood was interviewed on stage about book banning and the future of the country in relation to her book "The Handmaid's Tale," while also talking about the hit TV series adaptation.

Atwood urged communities to stand behind librarians, adding "high school libraries are so important."
