Akron Public Schools dominated this year’s Ohio Academy of Science awards for educators and schools that provide hands-on, inquiry-based science, technology, engineering and math learning experiences.

Of the 76 Ohio schools to receive the Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research, 40 of them are schools in the Akron City School District.

Of the 1,244 teachers recognized, 865 of them work at Akron Public Schools.

Superintendent Mary Outley said the award is a testament to the hard work and passion of the district’s educators.

“They are not just teaching subjects,” she said in a statement. “They are fostering a love for discovery and innovation that is directly impacting our district's performance.”
