A rail union is balloting its members working for train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) for strike action, it was revealed on Tuesday.

The ballot, which will also involve a vote on action short of a strike, involves TPE operations managers, said the rail union TSSA. The union said the ballot was being run in a dispute over on-call payments.

In a statement on Tuesday, the TSSA said 'several dozen members' would be balloted. TPE runs trains across Greater Manchester and the north west.

The union said: "The action follows the company's refusal to offer an acceptable on-call, overtime and compensatory time off in lieu (TOIL) package to staff.
