HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - On this date in 1947, West Virginia native Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the very first time in human history.

The X-1 flight sent him into the history books.

He was from Lincoln County and grew to become one of the daring test pilots who propelled America into the Space Age.

He died in 2020 at the age of 97, and he had a big memorial service at the Civic Center in Charleston.
