PORTLAND, Maine — A man from South Portland was taken into custody after he reportedly attempted to steal a vehicle while the owner was pumping gas at a gas station in Portland.
The incident happened around 5 p.m. Monday, when police were called to the Mobile Gas Station at 1196 Congress St. for a reported assault.
Portland police said in a news release that witnesses told authorities that the owner was pumping gas when a man entered his vehicle and attempted to drive away.
The owner then apparently jumped on the suspect while the vehicle was crashing into nearby bushes and restrained the individual until police arrived at the scene.
Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Aaric Rowe of South Portland.
Rowe was brought to Cumberland County Jail but was "denied entry due to a pre-
