The Newnan City Council approved a resolution Tuesday expressing its intent to reduce the city’s millage rate to 0.00 in August 2026, contingent upon voter approval of the proposed Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST).

FLOST was established under House Bill 581, signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on April 18, 2024. The measure, which took effect Jan. 1, 2025, allows local governments to implement an optional sales tax aimed at reducing property taxes. Implementation of FLOST requires approval by voters in a local referendum.

Coweta County and the municipalities in the county entered into an intergovernmental agreement calling for a countywide referendum on Nov. 4, 2025, when voters will decide whether to authorize the new sales tax.

If approved, collections from FLOST would begin Jan. 1, 2026
