WHEELING - After Day 1 of the Class AAAA state golf tournament at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, Washington found itself with a slim lead.

The Patriots finished with a score of 233, five shots ahead of second-place Hurricane, which had a 238. The rest of the field after one day of play included George Washington (239) in third, Wheeling Park (244) fourth, University (252) fifth, Cabell Midland (256) Parkersburg South (256) tied for sixth and Morgantown (263) eighth.

Washington's top performers on Day 1 were Brady Reed and Charlie Shultz, who are in a three-way tie for third with George Washington's Lee Willard after shooting a 77. Also for the Patriots, Tommy Evans is in eighth place after shooting a 79 and Ty McAteer 19th place after shooting an 84.
