An Olympic coach accused of raping and sexually assaulting a child has made his first appearance in court in Manchester.

Jose Vicente Leiva-Modahl, 65, who also goes by the name Vicente Modahl, is alleged to have committed a number of sex offences between the years of 2012 and 2024.

On Tuesday (October 14), he appeared from custody at Manchester Magistrates’ Court for a 15-minute hearing in which no pleas were indicated.

District Judge Richard Jepson told him some of the allegations were too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates’ court as he sent the case to Manchester Crown Court.

Modahl was granted conditional bail ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on November 18. Among his bail conditions
