BOSTON (WWLP) - Massachusetts lawmakers are considering several bills that could impact health insurance requirements, including one aimed at reducing barriers for gender-affirming care.

A State House committee held a hearing on Tuesday to evaluate the fiscal viability of pending bills, including one sponsored by Senator Jo Comerford. This bill seeks to simplify the process for obtaining insurance coverage for gender-affirming care by requiring insurers to accept a single written verification from a healthcare provider.

"These arbitrary requirements are designed to make it difficult for transgender patients to navigate the insurance system as they wait to receive care," said Isadel Saunter, Vice Chair of SEIU 509 COPE.
