Silver prices in India surged to over ₹1.89 lakh per kilogram in Delhi on Tuesday, driven by a shortage of the precious metal in physical form. The excitement amongst investors aside, jewellers and traders are facing a tough time amidst the shopping season ahead of Diwali next week.
"If we sell something in the morning and want to replace it in the evening, we don’t know whether supply will be available,” Krishna B Goyal, Convener of the Silver Jewellery Panel at the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), told CNBC-TV18.
"We, as jewellers, already foresee what kind of market or demand trends to expect during the festive season and prepare ourselves months in advance. This current supply crunch is recent; we have been witnessing it for the last 10 days," Goyal explained.
