TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Community leaders gathered to provide an update on the 22nd Street Bridge project, advocating to name the bridge after former City Councilman Richard Fimbres. The bridge, located off Cherrybell Stravenue and 22nd Street, is set to undergo significant changes.

The bridge will be redesigned and expanded from four to six lanes.

The project aims to accommodate heavier vehicles and increased traffic. Community leaders expect bids for the work to be submitted by the end of this month, with construction anticipated to begin early next year.

There is also a push to name the completed bridge the Richard G. Fimbres Bridge, honoring the former city councilman for his decades of public service to Tucson.
