PORT ARTHUR, Texas — October marks Blindness Awareness Month, a time to recognize the strength, resilience and experiences of those living with visual impairments. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 7 million people in the U.S. have vision impairments, and of those, 1 million are living with blindness.

Two Southeast Texas women are sharing their stories in hopes of breaking stereotypes and inspiring others. Melissa Jackson and Hattie Harmason both experienced major life changes but say they’ve found purpose in helping others.

“It is life still after blindness, and that motivated me,” said Melissa Jackson, a social media advocate who uses her platform to raise awareness and connect with others.
