Thousands are being called forward for a face-to-face interview by the Department for Work and Pensions, or DWP , every month. DWP figures show 4,000 face-to-face assessments for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) were conducted in August.

That figure is expected to rise under the DWP's welfare shake-up and reforms. Labour Party Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms has previously said the DWP "will increase the number of health professionals in assessment centres".

This is in order to "increase the number of face-to-face, rather than remote, PIP assessments", Mr Timms - who is leading a review into PIP - went on to add.
