SACRAMENTO — In a move impacting both environmental and cultural initiatives, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the veto of two bills from Senator Steve Padilla (D-San Diego) on Monday, halting measures aimed at the Salton Sea and the establishment of a California Latino Commission.
The vetoed legislation includes SB 369, which sought to mandate that restoration projects at the shrinking Salton Sea utilize a “skilled and trained workforce.” This requirement typically means a workforce that has participated in state-approved apprenticeship programs, a standard aimed at ensuring high-quality, union-backed labor on public works projects.
