BRAWLEY — The Imperial Valley Air Pollution Control District issued a hazardous air quality alert Monday evening after particulate matter (PM10) levels in Brawley reached an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 1033, one of the highest readings in recent years.

The reading, recorded at 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 13, at the monitoring station located at 220 Main Street, places the city well into the hazardous range, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.
