PARMA, Ohio -- Increasing costs for housing prisoners at the detention center finds Parma continuing to update fees charged to local communities housing inmates.

Less than a year after City Council approved a jump from $40 to $150 per day, a new ordinance is expected to increase the daily rate to $225.

“It’s being a good partner with our neighboring agencies, but our total inmate cost per day is $376.52,” Parma Police Chief James I. Blair said.

“So even at the $225 rate, it still costs us more.”

Parma’s 2024 budgeted corrections cost at the 26-bed facility was $2.27 million, which increased to $2.6 million this year.

The city also raised the prisoner fee last year from $40, which hadn’t been increased in nearly three decades.
