Whirlpool Corp. is investing $300 million to expand US production of washers and dryers, upping its domestic manufacturing as tariffs loom over foreign competitors.

The increased capacity at two Ohio plants would create between 400 and 600 jobs, the company said Wednesday.

Whirlpool has benefited from its US manufacturing as President Donald Trump’s tariffs have hit competitors. About 80% of its sales of major appliances in the US are produced in US factories, the company said. Competing firms on average are at about 25%, according to Whirlpool.

The company’s shares rose as much as 1.7% in premarket trading on Wednesday. The stock had declined about 35% this year through Tuesday.
