Alberta government dignitaries and members of the prominent local wrestling family announced the new name at a ceremony under the bridge
A highway bridge that crosses the Elbow River has been renamed after Stu Hart, the family patriarch who put Calgary wrestling on the map.
The westbound Highway 8 river crossing will henceforth be known as the Stu Hart Memorial Bridge, provincial officials announced Wednesday.
Construction of the $28-million bridge wrapped up in 2021, as part of the Alberta government’s ongoing Highway 8 twinning and bridge replacement project. Construction of the eastbound bridge, just to the south, is expected to be complete by next fall.
