NEW YORK (PIX11) -- During the fall season, the Long Island Rail Road operates specialized trains equipped with advanced technology reminiscent of science fiction.
The state-of-the-art laser trains have been deployed to significantly improve travel conditions on the LIRR.
The trains remove fallen leaves on the tracks, which can cause dangerous rail conditions. Pectin from crushed leaves can get more slippery with light rain, which can cause the wheels to slip or slide.
In some situations, trains may automatically make emergency stops when the onboard computer detects slip-sliding as a failure to slow down appropriately.
“We have already seen this past month, with several days of misty mornings, nearly zero slip- slide events, and estimate that we prevented 60 to 100 cars from being tak
