Inmates at all Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) facilities will soon receive their mail in a digital format, TDOC announced on Wednesday.
Starting November 3, TDOC will transition from physical to scanned, digitized personal mail for all inmates.
They say inmate mail will go to an off-site facility, where it will then be processed and scanned. Mail will then be delivered to inmates digitally via their TDOC-issued tablets.
TDOC explains this transition is to cut down on contraband entering their facilities. It will also speed up mail delivery, TDOC said.
Written mail and drawings will be included in the mail delivered to inmates digitally.
Officials said letters will be delivered at no cost to the inmate, and they will have access to them for the rest of their incarceration.
