Events DC, the city’s sports and convention authority, owes the District government $68.7 million, according to a recent analysis by the Office of the DC Auditor.

At the end of every fiscal year, Events DC, which receives taxpayer funds and is run by a board appointed by the mayor, is supposed to transfer any extra cash back to District coffers, according to D.C. law.

The tab at the end of fiscal year 2024, according to Events DC, was $17.7 million. But the auditor’s analysis concludes that the authority’s calculation falls far short. The total amount of excess cash that should have been transferred to the District, according to ODCA’s reading of the D.C. Code, is $86.4 million.
