TROUP COUNTY, Ga. (WRBL) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is conducting an independent investigation into the death of a Troup County Jail inmate.

According to the Troup County Sheriff's Office, on Oct. 14, 56-year-old inmate Jody Wilson began experiencing an "altered mental status episode" and was examined by medical staff at the jail. Wilson was later transported and admitted to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

The staff at the Troup County Jail was notified of Wilson's death late Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's office says a cause of death is currently unknown. The GBI's investigation is ongoing.
