COLUMBIA — Following UM System President Mun Choi's comments at a Downtown Community Improvement District board meeting Tuesday night, three Columbia City Council members are keen on achieving unity while addressing issues related to downtown.

At the Tuesday board meeting , Choi attributed some crime in downtown Columbia to homelessness through arrests and trespassing statistics.

According to Choi, there have been 156 arrests and 150 trespasses at MU involving unhoused people between 2019 and 2025.

"Let me be very clear, there are members of the community that pose no threat. They've come here, they want help, we provide them help. There are great city services, charitable organizations, and incredible work," Choi said.
