BLYTHE, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Gunshots were fired after a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon, spurring a huge law enforcement response.

It turns out the shots weren’t fired by the suspect but by a neighbor.

No one was injured, according to Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff Lewis Blanchard.

It happened around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 5700 block of Deans Bridge Road, just a couple of miles north of the Jefferson County line.

Deputies said an officer pulled over the driver, who came around to the front of his car, dropped a gun, picked it up, and fled into the woods.

Soon, three shots were fired.

Deputies said they later learned the shots were warning shots fired into the air by a nearby homeowner who “wanted to help.”
